ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING THE RIGHT OF RUSSIAN AND BELARUSSIAN CANDIDATES TO PARTICIPATE IN THE INTERNATIONAL MAJ LIND PIANO COMPETITION 2022 

The Competition Committee of the International Maj Lind Piano Competition strongly condemns Russia’s military action in Ukraine and is saddened by the humane distress this is causing. 
 
The Maj Lind Piano Competition is following the policy of the World Federation of International Music Competitions (WFIMC) that Russian and Belarussian pianists should not be excluded from participating in the competition on grounds of nationality. The Competition Committee of the International Maj Lind Piano Competition has concluded that Russian and the Belarussian pianists are entitled to apply for and participate in the competition. In addition, the Competition Committee has decided to exempt Ukrainians from paying the registration fee of €80. 

The Chairman of the Competition Committee is Erkki Liikanen. The other members of the Committee are Marit af Björkesten, Tuija Hakkila-Helasvuo, Miisa Järvi, Olli-Pekka Martikainen, Miikka Maunula, Niklas Pokki, Nasima Razmyar and Terhi Luukkonen (Secretary General). 

The Fifth International Maj Lind Piano Competition will be held on October 14–27, 2022 in Helsinki, Finland. The application period starts on April 1, 2022. The competition is hosted by the Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki.

The commissioned work for the competition was composed by Outi Tarkiainen. Competitors may, in the second round, alternatively improvise on a theme. The theme is issued 20 minutes before performance.
