Hannu Alasaarela (born 27 April 1994, Oulunsalo) started to play the piano at the age of eight with a private teacher, Anna-Maija Kinnunen. At the age of twelve he entered the Oulunsalo Art School and in 2014 the Sibelius Academy. He has been taught by Kimmo Pihlajamaa, Jouko Tötterström, Hui-Ying Liu-Tawaststjerna, Liisa Pohjola, Ilmo Ranta and Tuija Hakkila. Alasaarela won the first prize in the national Leevi Madetoja Piano Competition in 2012 (Oulu). He was also a laureate of the Helmi Vesa Piano Competition in 2015 (Helsinki). Alasaarela also composes.
