This year marks the 150th anniversary of Maj Lind’s birth. Her testamentary gift laid the foundation for the Maj Lind Piano Competition, which for decades has provided pianists with a stepping stone to an international career and has grown into a prestigious international piano competition.
Maj Lind was not widely known to the public, yet her contribution to supporting Finnish pianistic talent was decisive. In her will, she bequeathed part of her estate to the Sibelius Academy “for the development of pianists”. This decision led to the establishment of the Maj Lind Piano Competition, which has for generations given young pianists the opportunity to develop their skills and pursue an international career.
The competition was held for the first time in 1945, and in 2002 it became international, allowing young musicians from around the world to meet one another and perform in Finland. Over the years, it has supported numerous distinguished pianists and strengthened the field of classical music both in Finland and abroad.
The 150th anniversary of Maj Lind’s birth offers an opportunity to reflect on how one person’s decision can resonate across generations. Her vision continues to live on on the competition stage and in every musical moment it produces.
