{"id":11027,"date":"2025-11-04T19:06:21","date_gmt":"2025-11-04T17:06:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/majlindcompetition.fi\/competition\/rules-and-prizes\/"},"modified":"2026-09-29T09:21:14","modified_gmt":"2026-09-29T06:21:14","slug":"rules-and-prizes","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/majlindcompetition.fi\/en\/competition\/rules-and-prizes\/","title":{"rendered":"Rules and prizes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">HELSINKI international Maj lind piano competition 2027<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br>RULES<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>I<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki will organise the Sixth Helsinki International Maj Lind Piano Competition on 15-28 October, 2027. The competition is open to all pianists born in or after 1997, regardless of nationality. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>II<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Application is via the competition website at www.majlindcompetition.fi. A link to this site will be activated on April 1, 2027. Applications should append a quality video of their performance for the pre-selection process. The deadline for applications is May 20, 2027 at 4pm CET. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered. The non-refundable application fee is \u20ac100.     <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>III<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A team appointed by the Competition Committee will pre-select applicants on the basis of the application documents and videos. The names of the successful applicants will be announced by June 16, 2027 at the latest. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br><strong>Video repertoire:<br><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A programme lasting at least 10 minutes by one of the composers: Ludwig van Beethoven, Muzio Clementi, Jan Ladislav Dus\u00edk (Dussek), Joseph Haydn, Johann Nepomuk Hummel, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, or Franz Schubert. <br> <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A virtuosic \u00e9tude <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The video must clearly show the performance, the player\u2019s hands and face. The video must not be edited. Individual works or movements may, however, be recorded as different takes. The application must state when and where the video was made. The recording must not be more than two years old.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>IV<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Free accommodation will be provided for competitors for the duration of the rounds in which the competitor is in the competition. Competitors will pay their own travel expenses to and from Helsinki. The Competition Committee may, on application and at its own discretion, award a travel grant for competitors from outside Europe. Competitors needing a visa for Finland must obtain it themselves.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>V<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The order of performance in the competition will be decided in a draw to take place in the opening ceremony on October 13, 2027. Each competitor must attend the draw in person or authorise a personal deputy in writing. The order of performance will remain the same in the first and second rounds. In the finals the performance order may need to be changed for practical reasons.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>VI PROCEDURE AND REPERTOIRE<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There will be three rounds in the competition, all open to the public. The competition repertoire must be performed from memory, with the exception of the commissioned work to be performed in the second round, demanding contemporary works and the piano trio in the chamber music finals. The works in the first and second rounds may be played in any order. The Chair of the Jury will have the right to cut short a performance that exceeds the allotted time.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The optional works in the competition programme must also include music composed by composers other than men. Alterations to the competitor\u2019s repertoire will be permitted up to July 29, 2027. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>FIRST ROUND<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About 40 competitors will be accepted for the first round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Repertoire:<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A programme of music composed before 1757 and lasting at least 5 minutes. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An entire work by Ludwig van Beethoven, Muzio Clementi, Jan Ladislav Dus\u00edk (Dussek), Joseph Haydn, Johann Nepomuk Hummel, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, or Franz Schubert. The duration of the work must be at least ten minutes. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Three \u00e9tudes, one from each of the following groups:<br>a. Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric (Fryderyk) Chopin<br>b. Charles-Valentin Alkan, B\u00e9la Bart\u00f3k, Claude Debussy, Franz Liszt, Sergei Prokofiev, Sergei Rachmaninov, Camille Saint-Sa\u00ebns, Aleksandr Scriabin, Igor Stravinsky.<br>c. An \u00e9tude composed after 1975. An \u00e9tude composed by the competitor is not allowed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A programme of the competitor\u2019s own choice. The programme must not include compositions by the competitor.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The programme including pauses for the first round must not exceed 45 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>SECOND ROUND<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No more than 14 competitors will be accepted for the second round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Repertoire:<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A work by Jukka Tiensuu commissioned for the competition (duration 5\u20138 minutes).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A programme of at least five minutes of music by Jean Sibelius from the following opuses: Op. 5, Op. 12, Op. 24, Op. 34, Op. 40, Op. 41, Op. 58, Op. 67, Op. 68, Op. 74, Op. 75, Op. 76, Op. 85, Op. 94, Op. 96a, Op. 96c, Op. 97, Op. 99, Op. 101, Op. 103, and Op. 114.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A programme of the competitor\u2019s own choice.<br>If desired, the competitor may include in the program:<br>a. an improvisation on a theme given to the competitor 20 minutes before the performance<br>OR<br>b. a composition by the competitor (note: the score must be submitted to the organiser at the time of application)  <br>Items a and b are not mandatory.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The programme including pauses should last 50 to 60 minutes. The commissioned work will be sent to the competitors selected for the competition by August 1, 2027 at the latest. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>FINALS<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Six competitors will be selected for the finals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Repertoire:<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>One of the following piano trios:<br>Ludwig van Beethoven E-flat major Op. 70 No. 2 <br>Fanny Hensel-Mendelssohn D minor Op. 11<br>Robert Schumann D minor Op. 63<br>Johannes Brahms C major Op. 87<br>Maurice Ravel A minor (1914)<br>Magnus Lindberg (2011\/12)<br><br>The work will be performed with an ensemble chosen by the competition organisation<br><br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One of the following concertos:<br>B\u00e9la Bart\u00f3k No. 2 or 3<br>Ludwig van Beethoven No. 3, 4 or 5<br>Johannes Brahms No. 1 or 2<br>Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric (Fryderyk) Chopin No. 1 or 2<br>Edvard Grieg<br>Magnus Lindberg No. 1<br>Franz Liszt No. 1 or 2<br>Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart No. 15 B-flat major (K 450), 19 F major (K 459), 21 C major (K 467), or 22 E-flat major (K 482)<br>Sergei Prokofiev No. 2 or 3<br>Sergei Rachmaninov No. 2, 3 or Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini<br>Maurice Ravel G Major or Concerto for the Left Hand<br>Camille Saint-Sa\u00ebns No. 2 or 5<br>Robert Schumann<br>Pjotr Tchaikovsky No. 1<br>Jukka Tiensuu<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>VII<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Jury will consist of nine members: a Chair, seven non-Finnish members and one Finnish member.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>VIII<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">PRIZES<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I \u20ac30,000<br>II \u20ac25,000<br>III \u20ac20,000<br><br>The Jury will have the right to award the prizes in some other way.<br>The other three finalists will each receive a finalist prize of \u20ac8,000.<br>A special chamber music prize of \u20ac8,000.<br>A special prize of \u20ac1,500 for the best performance of the commissioned work Jukka Tiensuu in the second round.<br>Other special prizes may be awarded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>IX<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The prizes will be awarded after the finals on October 28, 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>X<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Competition Organisers, or any third party authorised by them, shall have the unrestricted right, worldwide and in perpetuity, to make audio and video recordings of competition performances and to broadcast, present, transmit, publish and distribute those performances and any recordings of them through any media channels and platforms, without any additional compensation to the competitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>XI<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The original language of these rules is Finnish. Any disputes will be settled on the basis of the Finnish text.
